Duo-Y, a dynamic Percussion and Saxophone Duo established in 2022 and based in Greensboro, NC, is the collaborative venture of percussionist Xin Yin and saxophonist Jia-Yu Yang, both currently pursuing their Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degrees at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Driven by a shared passion for the rich tapestry of both Eastern and Western musical traditions, Duo-Y is dedicated to expanding the boundaries of musical exploration. Our commitment extends to the promotion of diverse music, with a special focus on works by Asian composers. Through engaging collaborations with living composers, our duo endeavors to enrich and broaden the existing repertoire, showcasing the versatility of our instrumental pairing.

The name “Duo-Y” is derived from the initial letters of our last names, symbolizing a harmonious union. The imagery evoked by our name, with two equal and symmetrical lines stemming from a common root, encapsulates the essence of our collaborative spirit and represents the unity between Xin Yin and Jia-Yu Yang.

“I am really overwhelmed, it’s one of the BEST versions of Escape I have ever heard.  I cannot believe how you played that last movement!  Insane… I am not used to hearing people play what I actually have in my head.  Escape is so hard and you make it sound so easy. “—Marc Mellits

Escape for Alto Sax and Marimba by Marc Mellits (2016) by Duo-Y at UNCG recital hall on November 22, 2022.

Duo-Y’s debut album, Unrestrained, is in progress and will be published in the Fall of 2024.
